The origins of beadwork (moti bharat) can be traced to the beginning of the 19th century in Saurashtra, India – the centre of the craft’s production. The finest work, however, of which this is an excellent example, was made for the Kathi nobility. Motifs often include scenes from daily life such as flowers and elephant figures. Beadwork production all but ceased about 50 years ago.
