The 34 provinces of Afghanistan are named on this map, which has been turned sideways to fit on the rug. Afghanistan’s “panhandle” of the Pamir mountains, at the top, should instead be on the right. The square of writing in the upper right corner includes the Afghan flag and the Islamic date of the 27th day of Hamal 1371 (April 16, 1992 AD) which may be when the rug was being worked on.
