In Afghanistan, a Kalashnikov assault rifle is a guerrilla fighter’s most valued possession. It might have been given to him by his group commander to fight the Soviet invaders; the commander probably got it from the avalanche of weapons funded by the Americans and delivered secretly through Pakistan. Or it might have been taken from a dead Russian soldier. Because of its durability and ease of use, the Kalashnikov in its various forms remains the most widely used assault rifle in the world.
