Spinning Workshop with Meghann O'Brien

We are thrilled to announce visiting artist Meghann O’Brien (Jaad Kuujus)!

In this day-long workshop, artist Meghann O’Brien (Jaad Kuujus) will teach the thigh spinning technique used to prepare yarn for Raven's Tail weaving.

Participants are asked to bring shorts or tight white cotton leggings if they prefer not to have bare legs. Malabrigo Nube merino roving for spinning is included in the cost of registration.

Meghann O’Brien (Jaad Kuujus) is a Haida/Kwakwaka’wakw artist from Alert Bay, BC. Her weaving is currently featured in Crosscurrents: Canada in the Making. O’Brien apprenticed under master weavers and was taught the traditional Ravenstail and Chilkat weaving forms. She uses her artwork to explore her Northwest Coast cultural heritage and rebuild and maintain bonds with her community. O’Brien is interested in working with natural materials to explore notions of time and space, and continues to work with traditional forms to create contemporary pieces. She is committed to raising awareness about weaving as a living art form through exhibiting, speaking, and teaching and was recently the keynote speaker at the Textile Society of America’s 2018 Symposium in Vancouver, BC.
