A Tsutsugaki Furoshiki: Family Crest
ca. late Nineteenth, early Twentieth century
38 1/2" x 37", 98 cm x 94 cm
This indigo dyed cotton furoshiki, or wrapping cloth, is dyed using the tsutsugaki, or freehand paste resist method. Most likely part of a bridal trousseau, this cloth is dyed very deeply and shows a centrally placed family crest, or mon, in this case the mokko, or melon, design. There are small bits of staining to the mon, and pin prick sized holes and a small tear to the upper left hand side of the furoshiki. Boldly graphic, this is a lovely country textile.
