Crazy quilt

Eleanor stitched this eclectic quilt on a horse farm in Tennessee for her cousin in 1871 – read the inscription on the back. An embroidered black horse anchors the design, while farm animals, flowers, fish and a butterfly are dotted about. Aside from providing warmth, parents might use it to tell stories to children at bedtime.

Did making crazy quilts allow for more individual expression than other types of quilts – how and why?

Making crazy quilts allows for more individual expression than other types of quilting because the creativity of the seamstress is communicated through the abstract and sometimes random arrangement of the fabric pieces. The organization and grouping of fabrics, and stitching used is completely up to the seamstress. This is why there are such a large variety of quilts that have been made over the years. Each blanket is individually crafted using asymmetrical pieces of fabric. The designs on these blankets can be quite elaborate with the combination of beautiful fabrics and embroidered stitching. Some women would even go so far as to paint small pictures on the fabric. This form of art gave women the freedom to express themselves and tell their story. Often these quilts were used to record a family’s history with pieces of fabric collected from each member of the family. Some women would stitch various verses or names into the fabric, making each blanket truly unique. There was no limit but the imagination.
