This wall hanging is representative of the changes in Inuit culture that resulted as the people moved from a nomadic lifestyle to one of permanent settlement. The materials reflect these two spheres of influence, the old and the new – seal fur (used in traditional garments) and wool (obtained through trade with the south). Instead of creating objects for their own family use, Inuit women began to create art objects to sell to non-Inuit buyers as a means of financial support. Inuit stories, memories and knowledge began to be recorded visually, whereas previously the people had relied on an oral tradition.
