I feel as though there are lots of myths and legends about dragons and other similar "mythical" creatures, perhaps more so than many other things. A story that is always forefront in my mind when I think of dragons is one my grandfather used to tell. It is about St. George, who is the patron saint of England. Legend has it that there was a town in Europe that had a large pond where a dragon lived. People in the town would sacrifice animals as well as young maidens to the dragon, and one day that misfortune fell upon the King's daughter, who was next to be sacrificed. Despite the King's pleas to spare his daughter, the townsfolk gave the girl to the dragon. It was then that St. George heard of the problem, and came to help the princess. He was able to attach the princess's girdle to the dragons neck, and let the dragon into the town. St. George told the townspeople that if they all converted to Christianity, he would slay the dragon and end its destruction on the town forever. The people of the town agreed, and St. George did as he promised, slaying the dragon right then.
It is said that at the site where the dragon was killed a church was built, and also that there was a spring that cured all diseases.
