I made a scrapbook full of things I picked up on a really fun trip to San Francisco. Candy wrappers, bus transfers, receipts, flyers, Chinese food take-out menus and more. This probably sounds kind of unexciting, but I think simple things like this from different cities can provide a neat picture of how much little things like this matter in experiencing a new city.
