Tiger hat

For special occasions, Chinese mothers dress their young children in hats representing powerful animals such as tigers. It was believed that tigers frightened away evil spirits and ensured a prosperous future. While fierce in nature, the tiger on this hat is portrayed as non-hostile and charming. Behind each ear is a beautiful embroidered butterfly symbolizing happiness.

If a festival hat was made for you, which animal would you choose and which of its qualities would you hope were transmitted to you?

If I was lucky enough to have festival hat made for me I would that I would want it to be made to look like a Goat. I was born in 1991 and that was the year of the goat in the Chinese zodiac calendar. The characteristics of a person that is a goat is someone who is creative and intelligent. Those being two qualities that I want and I feel for the most part that I do have. Looking at the hat, I get the idea that it would be like a party hat that we would wear today. Instead of saying “Happy New Year” on it, it would have more meaning and expresses the ideas and the traits that the zodiac animal will bring for the year coming up. Some people don't believe in horoscopes and how they can relate to us. Personally, I do think someone people follow the horoscopes and zodiacs and play along to the qualities that are said to be like them. When you read the horoscopes, I find you could find things in them that you can relate to. The idea of being able to predict the future using character traits that were created many years ago is something that is very interesting to me. Being able to express those ideas and thoughts with an article of clothing is a very neat idea. I also feel that these hats would be something people would wear today. Many people (including me) have knitted hats that have different animals on them. I have the one with a frog on it. People buy them today for fashion and not for celebrating the year, but there are similarities between the style of the festival hats and the knitted hats that people wear. Overall, these hats are beautiful pieces of art and expression of the celebration.
