Blouse

White blouses and skirts with red embroidery comprise a woman’s traditional wedding costume in Romania. The colour red symbolizes life and fertility. In Romanian folk songs, women sing about blooming red flowers embroidered on their wedding costumes expressing their hopes for a long and happy marriage.

What other textiles and accessories were associated with the wedding, either as part of the bride’s costume or her dowry?

A nice embroidered skirt and apron, a headdress – often it would be a head kerchief, a necklace and a belt. In many Eastern European countries embroidered towels made especially for this occasion decorated the house of the bride; they were considered a very important part of the dowry.
